Governor Punjab did not give the date of provincial assembly elections, ECP statement

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has said that the Governor of Punjab has not given the date for the elections of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab.

Election Commission officials met Governor Punjab to consult on the date of Punjab Assembly election.

On the orders of the Lahore High Court, a consultative meeting was held between the Secretary Election Commission, Special Secretary, Director General Law and the Governor of Punjab.

Secretary Election Commission Umar Hameed told Governor Punjab in a briefing that according to the order of Lahore High Court, this meeting is being held on the direction of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to consult on the date of election of Punjab Assembly Punjab in the province.

Governor Punjab said that the Punjab Assembly has not been dissolved, so he is not authorized to give the date of election under the constitution. In this situation, their proposal will not be binding on the Election Commission.

He said that no one wants to take action outside the constitution and law, the High Court’s decision requires interpretation, for which we are taking the legal route so that the necessary interpretation of the constitution and law is done.

Governor Punjab said that the Chief Secretary and IG Punjab have given a detailed briefing to the Election Commission regarding the financial and security issues of Punjab at the Election Commission Secretariat Islamabad on February 8. Therefore, there is no need for re-briefing in today’s consultation meeting.
