The German government has announced that all plastic companies must contribute to the budget for cleaning streets and parks.
The cabinet agreed on a legal bill under which companies manufacturing single-use plastics will have to deposit money into the government’s central fund.
The law will come into force from 2025, the government estimates to collect 450 million euros through it.
Environment Minister Steffi Lemke said that currently only tobacco, beverage and food packaging companies pay taxes for cleaning purposes.
That should change, he said, adding that any company that produces single-use plastics should contribute to the budget for waste collection and cleanup.
